Description

COLLECTIBLE: Used in Straits Settlements--Penang, 1854, 1a Red, Die I (4; SG 12). Large balanced margins, tied by clearly struck reddish "B/147" cancel on folded cover to Shanghai, Augustine Heard & Co. correspondence, sender's directive "per Steamer Fiery Cross", red Sep. 1857 despatch datestamp (affected by opening), manuscript "4" rate, Hong Kong Oct. 8 transit backstamp, cover and stamp with slight soiling and also with splitting along folds FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE B/147 OBLITERATOR OF PENANG STRUCK IN RED--ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE ON A COVER TO CHINA. The ink used for the "B/147" cancel is a muddled red, which undoubtedly resulted from an unintended mixture of black and red inks. The Fiery Cross was the first of two British "tea" clippers bearing the same name. On Mar. 4, 1860, this ship was lost in the South China Sea after hitting a reef. The second ship was a famous clipper that competed in the Great Tea Race of 1866 Ex Wood, Piccus, Taylor, and Dr. Kornan.
